TL;DR: A custom museum-canvas portrait that drops your two dogs into a richly painted Renaissance scene — velvet drapes, warm oil-painting tones, the whole thing. Best for dog parents who treat their pets like family members (because they do), as a birthday, Christmas, or housewarming gift. One portrait per pair of dogs; $35 flat.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

This portrait lands best with dog parents who are slightly obsessed — the people who have their dogs' photos as their phone wallpaper, who refer to their pets by full names including middle names, who have bought exactly zero practical gifts for themselves in the last three years but would genuinely lose their minds over a museum canvas of Biscuit and Margot dressed like Flemish nobility. Age range skews 30-55; gift-givers tend to be adult children buying for a parent, partners buying for each other, or people buying for themselves without apology.

It also works surprisingly well as a memorial portrait. About 15% of our Renaissance pet orders come in with a note saying one of the dogs has passed. We handle those with extra care on the likeness check, because there's no reshooting that photo.

Who this isn't for: If your dogs have extremely dark coats with no visible facial contrast — think solid black Labrador against a dark background — the Renaissance palette can flatten the features. We'll still do our best, but we'd rather tell you upfront. A photo with decent natural light on the face gives us a lot more to work with. If you're unsure, email us the photo before ordering.

How it's made

You upload your dogs' photos, and our system runs them through a custom-trained image pipeline that maps each dog's face — muzzle shape, eye spacing, ear set, coat markings — onto the Renaissance composition. Then a human artist reviews the output. This is where it gets slower than competitors: we reject around 1 in 12 generations because something's off, usually the eyes or the snout loses definition in the translation to oil-painting style. Those get regenerated, not shipped. Once it passes the visual check, the approved file goes to our print lab where it's output on 360gsm poly-cotton canvas using archival pigment inks, then hand-stretched over a kiln-dried pine frame. Our head of production, Maya Chen, has a firm rule: if the dogs don't look like your dogs, it doesn't leave the building.

What makes this different

Generic pet portraits — the kind you find on Etsy or Amazon — usually mean a stock illustration with your pet's color swapped in, or a flat digital painting that looks the same as every other one in the search results. This is different because the face mapping is specific to your two dogs as a pair: their size ratio relative to each other, how they're positioned, the coat texture. We also retire Renaissance sub-compositions every six months, which means the exact framing your dogs appear in won't be mass-produced forever. Honestly, the thing that separates us most is the rejection pipeline — the fact that we throw out drafts and redo them isn't something we advertise loudly, but it's the reason our Trustpilot score on pet portraits sits at 4.9 while a lot of competitors are quietly hovering around 3.8. If you want a faster, cheaper version, those exist. They just won't look as much like your actual dogs. If you want one that does, this is it. And if you're buying for a human subject rather than a pet, the Custom Renaissance Man Portrait with Sword & Castle runs the same process but is optimized for human facial landmarks.

Of our 50,000+ orders since 2022, over 1,800 two-dog Renaissance canvases were produced in 2025 alone — making it one of our three highest-volume pet portrait formats, with an internal first-generation rejection rate of approximately 8-9% due to coat contrast and facial mapping challenges.
PortraitGift internal production data, 2025-2026
The U.S. pet industry reached $147 billion in spending in 2023, with pet owners increasingly purchasing premium and personalized items for their animals — a category growing at roughly 8% year-over-year.
American Pet Products Association (APPA) National Pet Owners Survey, 2023-2024
Renaissance compositions are the hardest pet format we run — the warm palette flattens dark coats, and the face mapping has to compensate for the fact that dogs don't have the same brow ridge structure as the human subjects the original paintings were built around. We reject about 8-9% of first-generation dog renders, compared to maybe 4% for human portraits. But when it works, it really works — in 2025 we produced over 1,800 two-dog Renaissance canvases and I think it's genuinely the most dramatic-looking thing we make.

What customers say

Renata K. · Portland, OR · ★★★★★

I ordered the 16×20 of my two golden retrievers, Fenwick and Clove, as a Christmas gift for my mom. She genuinely cried when she opened it. The faces are unmistakably her dogs — same goofy expression Fenwick always has, same alert ears on Clove. I was nervous because one photo was indoor lighting and one was outside, but they matched them perfectly. Already planning to order one of my own cat for her birthday.

James P. · Manchester, UK · ★★★★★

First order the sizing was off — my fault, I picked 8×10 and it felt too small for the wall space I had in mind. Emailed PortraitGift and they sorted an upgrade without any fuss. The 16×20 arrived a week later and it looks incredible. Both dogs look genuinely regal. My dachshunds have never looked more important and they know it.

Daniel R. · Austin, TX · ★★★★★

Bought this for my partner's birthday — she has two rescue pitbulls and treats them like royalty already, so putting them in actual Renaissance regalia felt very on-brand. Portrait arrived in six days, which I wasn't expecting that fast. The likeness on the brindle one is spot-on. Only thing I'd say is the dark-coated one's face is a little softer in detail, but still recognizably her. Worth every cent of the $35.

Care and shipping

US orders ship in 5-7 business days; EU and UK customers should expect 7-14 days depending on customs. The canvas arrives in a rigid flat-pack box with corner protection — we've had almost zero damage-in-transit complaints since we switched packaging suppliers in March 2024. For care: no direct sunlight if you can avoid it, and wipe dust with a dry microfiber cloth. Don't use water or cleaning sprays on the canvas surface. If something goes wrong — wrong size, damaged corner, likeness issue — our 60-day satisfaction policy covers a free reprint, no forms, no hoops. Just email us with a photo of the problem.

Frequently asked questions

What if my photo quality is low or the dogs are blurry?Low resolution is the single most common reason a first-generation render gets rejected internally. If your photo is under about 800px on the shortest side, or if the dogs are in motion and blurry, we'll reach out before printing. We'd rather delay by a day than ship something that doesn't look right. The best photos: natural light, both dogs facing roughly toward the camera, eyes visible. Phone photos from 2020 onward are usually fine — it's old scanned prints or screenshots that cause problems.
Can I submit two separate photos — one of each dog?Yes, and honestly that's sometimes better than a single photo where one dog is closer to the camera and looks twice the size of the other. Upload both and add a note in the order comments about which dog is which. Our artists will composite them into a single balanced composition. The only thing that doesn't work well is if one photo is dramatically different in lighting — a bright outdoor shot and a dark indoor shot don't always blend cleanly, so we may ask for alternates.
How long until I see a preview? We don't do live previews before printing — the composite rendering happens in our production queue, not in a real-time online editor. Your finished canvas ships within the stated production window. If this is a dealbreaker for you, that's fair, and we'd rather you know now. What we do offer is a likeness check before it goes to print, and if you're not happy with what we describe or show you at that stage, we'll regenerate.
Can I add a third dog later or swap one of the dogs? Not after the order is placed, unfortunately — the composition is built for two subjects and re-doing it for three would be a different product. We do have a three-pet option in development, but it's not live yet. If you want to add a dog, you'd need to place a new order. For a couple with two dogs and a cat who all need their own portrait, we've seen people order multiples and hang them as a triptych — a little extra spend but genuinely great on a gallery wall.
What if the likeness just isn't right when it arrives?Email us at hello@portraitgift.com within 60 days with a photo of the canvas and a quick note about what's off. We reprint first, ask questions second. In most cases it's a muzzle shape or eye color that didn't carry through, and a regeneration with adjusted parameters fixes it. We've issued 60-day reprints for Renaissance pet portraits and never once regretted it — a bad photo on someone's wall is worse for us than the cost of a reprint.
Is this actually a canvas or just a poster? It's a real stretched canvas — 360gsm poly-cotton blend, UV-resistant archival pigment inks, kiln-dried pine frame. It arrives ready to hang, no frame needed. A poster is a flat sheet you have to frame yourself; this ships as a finished art object. The side depth is about 1.5 inches, which gives it that gallery-wrapped look where the image wraps around the edges rather than stopping abruptly.
Does my order stay private or do you use the photos for marketing? We don't use customer photos in marketing without explicit written permission. Your dogs' faces are not going on our Instagram unless you say yes. We do keep order files for 90 days in case a reprint is needed, then they're purged. If you have a specific data concern, email us and we can walk through our data handling — it's not complicated, we're a portrait shop, not a data company.

Your dogs deserve to be painted like nobility. Upload two photos, pick your size, and we handle the rest — museum canvas, archival inks, ships in under a week.
