Opened it on my birthday and welled up on the spot — they turned us into a proper Western couple. Best gift I’ve had in years.

We’re both in our late 50s and it’s the most fun gift we’ve ever given each other. Takes pride of place in the den now.

The ancestors painted together on Christmas Eve around 1910, in a candle-lit parlour by a tree trimmed with real candles and popcorn strings.
A gift for the family historian at Christmas, or the whole family.
Upload the old photo and see the free preview in a few minutes. If you order, an artist checks the portrait and reads your order note, and nothing is printed until you approve it. The digital file is ready right after checkout. A canvas is printed and stretched in 6–8 business days after you approve the artwork, then ships free with tracking: about 3–5 business days in the US and 5–12 business days elsewhere. Check the live delivery estimate at checkout.
Most ancestor art is a photo enlarged, or a commission paid weeks before you see a sketch. This painting starts from the family’s own old photograph, keeps the face and the clothes in it, restores the damage, and shows you the result free before you decide.

That is the point: the painting follows the face in the photo, its shape, eyes, nose, mouth, hairline, moustache or beard, glasses and age. The free preview shows it before you pay, and if a detail is off after you order, an artist adjusts it before anything is printed.
The clearest copy you have: the print itself photographed flat by a window, without glare, or a scan. Cabinet cards, tintypes, real-photo postcards, wartime snapshots and faded colour prints all work. The painting is made from a small copy of each photo, so if the face is small (a full-length card on its mount, a farm snapshot), crop the photo to the person on your phone first, head to waist.
Yes. Sepia, black-and-white, faded, scratched, creased or torn photos come out restored, in full natural colour: the scratches, stains and the card mount are left out, and each person is painted at the age they are in the photo.
The face comes from the photo; the clothes are fitted to the scene, about 1910, keeping the character of what they wear in an old photo (the collar, the hat, the shawl, the brooch). For the clothes exactly as in the photo, choose The Heritage Portrait.
Four photos reach the painting in all. A photo of two to four people is cut into one picture per person and each counts, so a wedding photo of the couple counts as two. Check the little thumbnails before you generate, then count the faces in the free preview.
You see a free preview first. After you order, an artist checks the portrait and reads your order note, and nothing is printed until you approve it; ask for a change and the artist makes it before printing.
