TL;DR: A custom memorial portrait that places your family — or a loved one you've lost — inside a Renaissance painting. Hand-finished on museum canvas. Best for families who want something more permanent than a framed photo, especially after a loss. Starts at $35, one portrait per generation.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

This portrait was built for three kinds of people, and they order it at very different moments. The first is someone who just lost a parent or grandparent and wants something to hang at the memorial service or give to siblings — something that doesn't look like a drugstore enlargement. We see a lot of orders in the 2–6 weeks after a funeral, usually from adult children in their 40s who want a physical object that carries some weight. The Renaissance aesthetic does something a regular photo can't: it makes the person look timeless rather than gone.

The second archetype is the family reunion organizer — usually a mom or aunt, 50s or 60s, who wants a centerpiece gift for the matriarch or patriarch still living. "My grandma turns 85 and I want her to feel like royalty" is almost a word-for-word line we get in customer emails several times a month. This portrait delivers exactly that feeling without the $800 price tag of a commissioned oil painting.

Third: couples or families who lost a pet and want to include them in a family-style portrait. We actually have a dedicated Custom Memorial Pet Portrait for that, and the Renaissance family version works well if you want pets and people in the same composition — just mention it in your order notes.

Who this isn't for: If you're expecting a photorealistic recreation of an exact face from a blurry or low-resolution phone photo taken ten years ago, you'll be disappointed. The Renaissance style softens and stylizes — that's part of what makes it feel painterly rather than digital. We can work with a lot, but if the source image is genuinely poor quality, the face likeness suffers. We'll always tell you upfront if we think the photo won't produce a strong result.

How it's made

You upload your photo, and our system runs it through a guided AI face-swap process built on top of a fine-tuned Renaissance portrait model — think brushstroke texture, period-appropriate lighting, jeweled collars and velvet backgrounds. That part is fast, maybe 90 seconds. What isn't fast is what happens next: every generation goes to a human artist on our production team who checks face geometry, skin tone accuracy, and whether the background elements are fighting the subject. We reject about 1 in 12 outputs at that stage and regenerate. Once a version passes, the artist makes manual refinements — correcting eye symmetry, adjusting color warmth — before the file gets sent to print on 200gsm museum-weight canvas with archival pigment inks. Our head of production, Maya Chen, set that 200gsm floor herself in early 2023 after a batch of thinner canvas came back with complaints about warping. It hasn't been an issue since.

What makes this different

Generic Renaissance canvas prints — the kind you find on large print-on-demand marketplaces — are stock illustrations with your photo dropped into a pre-made frame. The face sits on top of the painting rather than inside it. What we do is different: the face is generated into the scene, so lighting, shadow, and brushstroke texture wrap around your person's actual features. It's one-of-one. We also retire theme variants every six months so we're not still selling the same composition we launched in 2022 — the version you order today won't be the version someone else's cousin ordered last year. That matters more than people expect when it's hanging on a wall as a memorial piece. You want it to feel singular, not catalog.

Of our 50,000+ orders since 2022, the Memorial Renaissance Family Portrait was our single highest-reorder theme in Q1 2025 — customers who ordered one memorial portrait returned to order a second for a sibling or other family member at a rate of 34%, higher than any other theme in the catalog.

71% of Americans say they want a meaningful, personalized keepsake rather than flowers or gift cards when expressing condolences after a loss.
National Funeral Directors Association Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study, 2023
The Memorial Renaissance is the one theme where I refuse to let a rough generation through, even if it means a 24-hour delay. We've rejected over 400 generations in 2025 alone on this theme specifically because the emotional stakes are different — someone is honoring a person they've lost. Getting the face wrong isn't a minor inconvenience; it's a real harm.

Sandra M. · Nashville, TN · ★★★★★

We lost my mother-in-law in October 2024 and I ordered this for Christmas to give to her three kids. When they unwrapped it, two of them cried. The face looked so much like her — same expression she always had, a little formal, a little proud. The Renaissance style made it feel like she belonged in history rather than just in the past. I ordered the 24×36 and it now hangs in my sister-in-law's living room.

Thomas B. · Edinburgh, Scotland · ★★★★★

My first preview wasn't quite right — the eye color was off and one of the children in the portrait looked a bit different from the source photo. I submitted a revision request with specific notes and the second version was significantly better. Genuinely impressed they got the skin tones right on a family with mixed heritage. Arrived in 12 days, well packaged, no damage. Would order again for my parents.

Priya K. · Austin, TX · ★★★★★

Ordered this as a 75th birthday gift for my grandmother — still very much alive and absolutely delighted. She said it was the most unusual gift she'd ever received and it's been hanging in her dining room since March. The velvet background and the calligraphy with her name and birth year underneath look genuinely expensive. Nobody believes we paid $35 for it.

Care and shipping

We print and ship from our production facility within 2–3 business days of final approval. US delivery runs 5–7 business days after that; EU and UK customers should expect 7–14 business days, and international orders outside those regions can take up to 18 days — we can't control customs hold times, which occasionally adds 3–5 days. The canvas ships rolled in a rigid tube, not flat-packed, so it arrives without crease marks. Once it's hanging: keep it out of direct sunlight and away from humid rooms (bathrooms, especially). A dry cloth for dust is all it needs. If you're not happy with the portrait for any reason within 60 days of delivery, reach out and we'll reprint or refund — no bureaucratic hoops.

Frequently asked questions

What if the only photo I have isn't very sharp or is older? We work with older photos regularly — scanned prints, early digital camera shots, even photos of photos. The honest answer is that quality goes down with resolution. If your image is below roughly 500×500px, the face likeness will be softer than you'd want. We recommend uploading the highest-resolution version you have, even if you need to scan a physical print. If we think the photo genuinely won't produce a strong result, our team will contact you before proceeding rather than just printing something subpar.
Can I include a person who has passed away using an old photo?Yes, and honestly this is one of the most common reasons people order this portrait. We've produced hundreds of memorial pieces where the subject passed months or years before the order. The process is the same — you upload the best photo you have. For deceased loved ones, we also apply a bit more care in the artist review stage because we know there may not be another chance to get it right. If you have multiple reference photos, you can include them in the order notes and our artist will use them to cross-reference the face.
How many people can be in one portrait?Up to about 5–6 subjects works well in a single canvas. Beyond that, faces start getting small and the Renaissance composition gets crowded — it stops looking like a painting and starts looking like a group photo in costume. For larger families, we usually recommend splitting into two portraits or picking a smaller group (grandparents + kids, for example). If you're unsure, mention the number of subjects in your order notes and we'll advise before producing.
How long until I see the portrait? After you upload your photo, you'll receive a digital preview within 24–48 hours. Once you approve it (or request a revision), we go to print. US orders typically arrive 7–10 business days after initial upload. EU orders run 10–17 business days total. We won't print until you've approved the preview — that approval step is the one that adds a day or two but saves the headaches of "it doesn't look like them" returns.
Can I request a revision if the face doesn't look right in the preview?Yes, one revision round is included in every order. If the face likeness is off, tell us specifically what's wrong — eyes too wide, skin tone too warm, hair color wrong — and our artist will adjust before reprinting. We can't guarantee perfect photorealism in a painted Renaissance style, but we can get it close enough that people recognize the person immediately. What we can't fix in revision is a fundamentally low-quality source photo.
Is this the right portrait if I also want to memorialize a pet?It can be — you can include a pet in a family composition and it works fine. But if the memorial is specifically for a pet rather than a person, we've built dedicated products for that. The Custom Memorial Pet Portrait with Angel Wings is designed specifically for dogs, and we have a similar version for cats. Those compositions put the pet at the center rather than as a supporting element, which lands better emotionally for that use case.
Does the name personalization show up on the canvas itself?Yes. You can include a name, dates (birth and passing), or a short phrase — up to about 20 characters — printed in period-appropriate calligraphy style within the lower portion of the composition. Keep it short. We've seen people try to fit full eulogies into the text field and it doesn't look good at any size. A name and two dates is the sweet spot.
What's the return policy if I just don't like how it turned out?60 days from delivery. If the portrait doesn't meet your expectations — whether that's a quality issue on our end or it just didn't turn out the way you hoped — contact us and we'll either reprint it or refund you. The only thing we ask is that you actually use the revision round first if it's a likeness issue, because a second generation usually solves it. Refunds for 'I approved it but changed my mind' are handled case-by-case, but we're not rigid about it.

Upload a photo and see your family — or someone you've lost — transformed into a Renaissance portrait that's worth hanging for the next 50 years.
