For a picture on an open wall, start with the artwork’s vertical center at about 57 inches from the floor — a widely used gallery eye-level convention. That is the center of the frame, not the nail. The nail has to sit higher because the hanging wire drops below the top of the frame when it is pulled taut.
This calculator turns that rule into a measurement you can mark on the wall. Enter the frame height and measure the drop from the top of the frame to the taut wire (or D-ring) where it meets the hook. It returns the picture center, frame edges, and exact hook height from the floor.
Hanging art above a sofa, console, or bed
Above furniture, a comfortable visual gap usually matters more than forcing the frame center to 57 inches. A practical starting point is 6–10 inches from the furniture top to the frame bottom. Turn on the furniture option, enter the furniture height and the gap you want, and the calculator uses whichever placement is higher: eye level or the clearance you set.

How much space should be between a picture and a sofa?
About 6–10 inches between the sofa top and the frame bottom is a useful starting range. Use the clearance field to match your room, frame depth, and lamp or cushion height.
Does this work for D-rings instead of wire?
Yes. Set the drop to the distance from the frame top to the D-ring where the hook will support it. If the rings are level with the top edge, enter 0.
