A caricature and a cartoon are not the same thing, and searching for one and getting the other is the usual disappointment. A cartoon smooths a face into a clean animated style; a caricature does the opposite — it finds the features that make someone unmistakably themselves and turns them up. The big grin, the strong nose, the beloved bald head, the coffee-and-keyboard hunch: a good caricature exaggerates the truth rather than hiding it, which is exactly why it gets the laugh and the “that’s SO them” reaction a smooth portrait never will.
