We launched the forest theme in early 2023 after customers kept emailing asking for something that felt "earthy" and "not so costume-y" — their words, not ours. Since then it's quietly become one of our top nature-adjacent themes, with over 2,100 forest-style portraits shipped through mid-2026. The most common note from buyers: they didn't expect it to look this painterly in person.

Who this collection suits

Nature people, first and foremost. We're talking about the person in your life who has a national-parks passport, keeps a pair of muddy trail runners by the door, and whose home decor leans toward wood, linen, and exactly zero mass-market prints from big-box stores. A custom forest portrait fits that aesthetic without trying too hard.

Pet owners are a big segment here, too — probably our biggest for this theme. Dogs especially photograph beautifully against illustrated forest backdrops; there's something about the earthy tones that flatters almost any coat color. We've done a surprising number of cat portraits in this style as well, mostly for people who describe their cat's personality as "mysterious" or "feral in a cute way."

It's also a strong pick for couples and families who have a shared relationship with the outdoors — a pair of hikers, a family that has a favorite camping spot, parents who want to commemorate a trip with their kids that felt genuinely meaningful. The forest theme adds a kind of storybook quality that more literal photo prints can't pull off.

How to pick the right one

No featured products have been linked to this collection yet, so here's how to think about what to order based on what we know about how this theme performs across our catalog.

Single-subject portraits — one person, centered, strong eye contact with the camera — tend to produce the most striking forest art results. The illustrated woodland environment frames a solo figure really well, almost like a fantasy-novel cover. If you're shopping for a birthday or a "just because" gift for someone who spends a lot of time outside, this is the configuration we'd recommend starting with.

Couple portraits in the forest theme are our second-most-common request in this category. The trick is choosing a photo where both subjects are genuinely close together — not side-by-side-but-a-foot-apart close, actually close. The forest backdrop does a lot of atmospheric work, but it needs the subjects to anchor the composition or it can feel a little busy.

Pet portraits, as mentioned above, are worth calling out specifically: if you're torn between the forest theme and one of our more elaborate fantasy themes for a dog or cat portrait, the forest option tends to age better on a wall. It's quieter. More "I would actually hang this in my living room" and less "this is hilarious for the first month." Both are valid — we just want you to pick the right one for your situation.

For families or groups of three or more, we'd honestly suggest going up a size (more on that in the table below). A 16×20 minimum for three subjects in a forest scene; the detail gets lost below that.

Under $50: A single-subject forest portrait on our standard canvas print sits right at the entry point for this collection. Solid option if you want to test the style before going bigger — or if you're gifting a pet portrait and don't need a large format to make it work.

$50–$100: This is where couples portraits and larger single-subject canvases live. Most of our forest orders fall in this range. The 16×20 size is the sweet spot — large enough to feel like a real piece of wall art, not so large that shipping becomes a concern.

$100+: Family portraits with multiple subjects, larger format canvases (20×24 and up), or rush orders that need expedited handling. Worth it if the piece is intended as a centerpiece in a room rather than a shelf accent. We've had customers order 24×30 forest family portraits and they're genuinely impressive — the brushwork detail in the background holds up at that size.

Occasion deadlines

Father's Day 2026 (June 21): Order by June 12 for standard US delivery (5–7 business days). International orders — June 4. Don't cut it closer than that; we've seen delays at the printing facility during peak gift weeks and we'd rather be honest about it than have you stress on June 19.

Christmas 2026 (December 25): US orders: place by December 15 for standard shipping. International (EU, UK, AU): no later than December 8. If you're ordering in that final week before Christmas, select expedited — we can't guarantee standard will make it.

Valentine's Day 2027 (February 14): US deadline February 6. International January 30. Couples forest portraits are popular in the week leading up to Valentine's — order early; production queues fill up.

Birthdays and non-seasonal gifts: Standard US turnaround is 5–7 business days from order confirmation. EU and UK typically 7–14 business days. Australia and New Zealand: 10–16 business days. If the birthday is in less than 10 days and you're in the US, reach out to us — we'll tell you honestly whether we can make it.

The forest theme is one of the few styles where a mediocre source photo can still produce a genuinely beautiful result. The environment does a lot of narrative work — if the subject's face is sharp and the lighting is decent, our artists can build something compelling around it even if the original background was a blank wall.

We retired an earlier version of this theme in late 2023 because the color palette was too dark — customers liked the concept but said it felt 'gloomy' in real-world lighting conditions. The current version has more warmth and variation in the canopy light. That feedback loop between customer notes and product iteration is genuinely how we improve.
