Roman Portraits: Turn Your Photo Into Roman Art

TL;DR: You upload a photo, we transform it into a custom roman portrait — think marble busts, laurel wreaths, toga-draped figures, rich classical roman painting aesthetics — printed on museum-quality canvas and shipped to your door in 5–7 days (US). Starts around $49. It's genuinely one of the more striking personalized gifts we make.

Since launching the Roman collection in early 2023, we've shipped over 3,200 roman portrait orders — and it's quietly become one of our fastest-growing historical themes, behind only Viking and Royal. The most-ordered combination, by a wide margin: a solo portrait of a man, framed like a Roman general. Husbands, dads, brothers. Apparently a lot of people have someone in their life who needs to be immortalized in roman art. We get it.

PortraitGift has shipped 50,000+ orders since 2022 — 4.9 out of 5 across 1,247+ verified Trustpilot reviews. The Roman portrait collection specifically has logged 3,200+ orders since its 2023 launch, with a reorder rate of roughly 18% (people buying a second portrait for someone else after receiving one as a gift, which is the metric we're most proud of). Every portrait is printed on museum-grade canvas and hand-finished before shipping — we don't batch-print and box. Returns are rare: under 2% of Roman orders in 2025 came back, and when they did it was almost always a shipping damage issue, not a quality issue with the portrait itself.

Who this collection suits

History buffs who own at least one book about ancient Rome and have almost certainly watched Gladiator twice. These are the people who'll actually study the classical roman painting details — the draping, the laurel, the expression — rather than just hang it and walk past. If someone in your life has a framed map of the Roman Empire somewhere in their home, this is the gift. Order with confidence.

The other big archetype: office decorators. We noticed this pattern starting in late 2023 — a wave of customers, mostly buying for themselves or their partners, who wanted something on the home-office wall that was visually bold but not a standard motivational print. A Roman portrait fits that gap. It's conversation-starting without being kitsch. Several customers have told us their Zoom-call backgrounds now feature their own roman portrait, which honestly we find delightful.

And then there's the birthday crowd — specifically milestone birthdays for men: 30th, 40th, 50th. A roman painting of someone turning 40 hits differently than a gift card. We've seen this spike every January and April in our order data, right around common birthday gift lead times. If you're shopping for a guy who's about to hit a round number and you're sick of the usual options, this collection is worth a serious look.

How to pick the right one

We don't have a huge product sprawl in the Roman collection right now — it's a tighter lineup than, say, our Fantasy or Royal themes, which have eight or nine variants. That's actually useful: fewer bad choices. Here's how we'd break it down based on who you're buying for.

For the person who wants maximum drama, the full Roman General composition is the move. It's the most popular roman portrait style we offer — laurel crown, armor detail, serious expression. Works best on larger canvas sizes (18×24 minimum; honestly, go 24×36 if you can). Anything smaller and the detail gets lost. Don't skimp on size here.

If you want something slightly more refined — less "conquering general", more "senator at rest" — the classical bust-style roman painting is the one. Cleaner composition, works well as a pair if you're doing a couple. We've had a few anniversary orders in this style that came out beautifully. It reads more like roman art in a gallery than roman art on a movie poster, if that distinction makes sense to you.

For a younger recipient, or anyone with a sense of humor about themselves, the more stylized graphic-Roman approach tends to land well. It's still roman-themed portrait work, still looks genuinely impressive on a wall, but the aesthetic is a little looser. Less Cicero, more Ancient Aliens narrator energy. That sounds like a criticism — it isn't. Some people want that, and it works.

One honest caveat: if your photo has very low resolution or heavy background clutter, the Roman themes are less forgiving than some of our others (like Superhero or Wanted Poster). The classical roman art style depends on clean face detail. We'll flag it if the upload is borderline, but it's worth shooting in decent light before you order.

By budget

Under $50

The entry-level roman portrait on a standard canvas size (12×16) starts at $49. It's a real portrait on real canvas — not a print-on-demand poster — and it looks the part. If you're testing the gift idea or working with a tighter budget, this is a perfectly solid option. The smaller size does limit the classical roman painting detail, but for display on a desk or bookshelf shelf, it holds up fine.

$50–$100

This is the sweet spot for most orders. An 18×24 or 20×28 roman portrait in this range gives the artwork room to breathe. The Roman General and Classical Bust styles really open up at this size — you start seeing the texture in the background, the definition in the face. The Roman Couple Portrait also sits in this tier. Honestly, if you're unsure what size to pick, just go one size larger than your first instinct. Almost nobody regrets going bigger.

$100+

The 24×36 statement canvas. This is where the roman art effect genuinely looks museum-level — and we say that without embarrassment, because the museum-canvas material we use is the same grade. It's a lot of wall. It commands a room. If you're buying for someone who has a home office, a den, or a dining room with high ceilings, this is the version that gets photographed and texted to family members. Pairs with our premium framing option.

Occasion deadlines

Shipping Cutoffs by Occasion

Father's Day 2026 (June 21): Order by June 12 for standard US shipping (5–7 business days). International orders: June 5 at the latest — EU/UK delivery runs 7–14 days and customs can add a day or two unpredictably. If you're in Australia or Canada, give it until June 3 to be safe.

Christmas 2026: US orders: December 16. International: December 8. We hold these dates pretty firmly — the last week before Christmas the carriers are under serious volume pressure and we don't want to promise something we can't deliver. Order earlier. Genuinely.

Valentine's Day 2027 (February 14): US deadline February 6. International February 1. The Roman Couple Portrait is a strong Valentine's pick and we see a volume spike in late January — earlier orders get more production attention, not less.

Birthdays (any date): US: order 9–10 business days before the date to be comfortable. International: 16–18 business days minimum. If you're cutting it close, contact us — we occasionally have rush options available depending on queue volume.

All deadlines assume standard production time (2–3 business days) plus shipping transit. Expedited options may be available at checkout.

3,200+ roman portrait orders shipped since the collection launched in early 2023, with an 18% reorder rate — meaning roughly 1 in 5 customers orders a second portrait after receiving one as a gift.

Roman portrait is the #3 historical-theme portrait category at PortraitGift by order volume in 2025, behind Viking (#1) and Royal (#2) — and the fastest-growing of the three year-over-year.
PortraitGift internal data, 2025–2026
The Roman General style consistently outperforms our other historical themes for men's milestone birthdays — 40th, 50th especially. There's something about being depicted in full Roman armor that resonates in a way a Royal portrait doesn't quite hit for that same demographic. We noticed the pattern in Q2 2023 and it's held steady ever since.

The most common thing customers say when they contact us after receiving a roman portrait isn't 'thank you' — it's 'my husband wants one for himself now.' The reorder signal in this collection is strong, and it almost always comes from the recipient side, not the original buyer. That tells us the actual product is landing.

· Roman General Portrait – 24×36 Canvas

Bought this for my dad's 50th. He's been obsessed with Roman history since forever — has a shelf of Mary Beard books, watched every HBO Rome episode three times. When he opened it he genuinely didn't say anything for about ten seconds, just stared. Then: 'This is the greatest thing I've ever been given.' I ordered the 24×36 General style and it now hangs in his study. Production took three days, arrived perfectly packaged. 10/10 would commission a roman portrait again.

· Roman Couple Portrait – 18×24 Canvas

Got the Roman Couple Portrait for our 5th anniversary — we'd been joking for years that we should have a 'grand portrait' of ourselves and this finally made it happen. The roman painting style is more refined than I expected, not over-the-top at all. It arrived in 10 days to the UK and the canvas quality is genuinely impressive in person. Only minor thing: I wish I'd gone one size larger. Get the bigger canvas.

· Classical Roman Bust Portrait – 18×24 Canvas

I ordered this for my own home office, full disclosure. Uploaded a decent headshot, went with the Classical Bust style because I wanted something that looked like roman art rather than a movie poster. It delivered exactly that — my wife said it looked like something from a museum gift shop, which is a compliment in our house. The detail in the background rendering is better than I expected. Shipped in 6 days, no issues.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a custom roman portrait? You upload a photo — ideally a clear, well-lit face shot — and our artists digitally transform it into a roman-themed composition: think draped togas, laurel wreaths, classical roman painting backgrounds, armor detail. The result is printed on museum-grade canvas. It's not a filter or an app; there's actual artistic work involved in the transformation, which is why production takes 2–3 business days before it ships.
How good does my photo need to be for a roman portrait to turn out well?Better than you might think, honestly. Roman art style depends on clean facial detail — unlike our Superhero or Wanted Poster themes, the classical roman painting aesthetic doesn't hide much. A well-lit front-facing photo, ideally 1MB+ and not heavily cropped, works best. Blurry, low-light, or very small uploads tend to produce softer results in this collection specifically. We review every upload and will contact you if the photo quality is borderline before we start production.
Can I order a roman portrait of more than one person?Yes — the Roman Couple Portrait supports two people in a single composition. We currently don't offer three or more subjects in the Roman collection (we get asked about family group shots regularly and it's something we're working toward, but it's not live yet). For group portraits right now, our Royal or Fantasy collections have more multi-subject flexibility.
Is a roman portrait an appropriate gift if the recipient has never mentioned ancient Rome?Fair question — gift etiquette matters here. If someone has no obvious connection to Roman history, the gift can still land because it's fundamentally a personalized portrait of them, styled dramatically. The roman art aesthetic reads as 'impressive and artistic' even to people who couldn't name a Roman emperor. That said, it lands harder when there's a hook: they're a history teacher, they love Gladiator, they redecorated their office with a classical theme. Context helps. When in doubt, the Royal or Viking styles are a bit more universally intuitive as gifts.
What canvas sizes are available, and which should I pick?Sizes run from 12×16 up to 24×36 (and occasionally larger for custom requests). For the Roman General or Classical Bust styles, we genuinely recommend not going below 16×20 — the background detail and composition depth that makes roman portrait art impressive doesn't translate well on smaller formats. If it's going on a home-office or living-room wall, 18×24 is the most popular size for a reason. 24×36 is for people who want a statement piece, and it earns that description.
How long does production and shipping take?Production is 2–3 business days. US shipping from there is 5–7 business days standard — so total from order to delivery is typically 9–10 business days in the US. International (EU, UK, Australia) runs 7–14 days for shipping after production. We send a tracking number as soon as it ships. Rush production is occasionally available if you contact us before ordering — queue-dependent.
Can I request specific roman painting details — a particular style, background, or prop? You can leave notes at checkout and we do read them. Common requests we can accommodate: specific background tone (darker/lighter), whether you want the armor-heavy General style versus a more refined civic Roman look, adding a pet to the composition. What we can't do yet: fully custom scene design from scratch, specific historical figure references, or text inscriptions in Latin on the canvas itself (a surprisingly popular ask — we're aware of it). If you have a detailed request, email us before ordering and we'll be honest about what's feasible.
What if the portrait doesn't look right when it arrives?Contact us within 14 days of delivery with a photo of the issue. If it's a production error on our end — color shift, printing artifact, composition problem — we'll reprint at no charge. If it's a matter of taste ('I thought it would look different'), we work case-by-case; we're not robotic about it. The honest stat: under 2% of Roman collection orders in 2025 resulted in a return or reprint request. Most issues, when they happen, are shipping damage rather than portrait quality.

Somewhere between 'thoughtful gift' and 'genuinely jaw-dropping' — that's the roman portrait sweet spot. Upload a photo, pick your style, and we'll handle the rest. Museum-canvas. Hand-finished. Shipped in 5–7 days.
