Couples portraits are our single biggest category — roughly 14,200 ordered in 2025 alone, which we didn't fully expect when we launched the theme lineup in early 2023. The Regency and Viking styles have been neck-and-neck for the top spot all year. Worth knowing if you're deciding between them.

Who this collection suits

The most common buyer we see is someone shopping for an anniversary — specifically a first or third anniversary, when 'paper' or 'leather' gift conventions feel a bit dusty. They want something personal but not cheesy, and they've usually already tried framed photos. A custom couple portrait hits differently because it's interpretive — your faces, but in a world that isn't yours. That gap between real and fantastical is what makes people actually hang it.

We also get a lot of Valentine's Day orders from people who have been together long enough that flowers and chocolates feel like going through the motions. Partners who share a fandom — Star Wars, fantasy novels, pirate fiction — go straight for the themed portraits. Picking the right couple portrait honestly comes down to two questions: how well do you know their taste, and how formal do you want the final piece to feel? Here's how we'd think through it.

If the couple has a specific aesthetic — they're into period dramas, they've watched Bridgerton three times, they own actual candles that smell like old libraries — the Regency Romance Couple Portrait is the obvious call. It's painterly, it's warm, and it reads as art rather than a novelty item. This one tends to go on the living room wall, not the office shelf.

For couples who are more into adventure, gaming, or anything with a 'us against the world' energy, we'd point you toward the Viking Couple Portrait or the Viking Lovers Portrait. Functionally they're similar — both Norse-warrior styled — but the Lovers variant leans more romantic while the standard Viking goes harder on the armor and epic-landscape composition. If in doubt, go Lovers for anniversaries, standard Viking for birthdays.

The Superheroes Couple Portrait is our go-to recommendation when the couple met through a fandom, does cosplay, or just has a strong 'power couple' identity. It's also the one that gets the most Instagram shares, for whatever that's worth. Leans younger — buyers 25–38 overwhelmingly.

Pirate-themed options are genuinely underrated for couples who love travel or sailing. We have two versions worth looking at: the Pirate Couple Portrait and the Pirate Lovers Portrait | Custom Captain & Pirate Queen. The Captain & Pirate Queen framing in the Lovers version tends to resonate with couples who like a bit of cheeky role-play energy in their aesthetic. The standard Pirate portrait is more swashbuckle, less romance.

Finally, if neither of you can agree on a theme — or you're buying for someone whose taste is genuinely a mystery — the Rugged Romance Portrait is the safest bet. It's contemporary, warm, and doesn't commit to a specific era or fandom. We've had zero complaints about it feeling 'too niche.' The flip side: it's also the least likely to get a 'wait, this is literally us' reaction. Depends what you're going for.

Under $50 — Every single one, honestly

All of our custom couple portraits start at $35, which means the entire collection lives comfortably under the $50 mark at base size. That includes the Regency Romance Portrait, the Viking Couple Portrait, the Superheroes Portrait, and everything else in the grid. No theme is paywalled behind a premium tier. You're paying $35 for the digital file and base print — size upgrades push the price up from there.

$50–$100 — Mid and large canvas upgrades

If you want to go bigger — and for a couple's portrait, bigger usually means better — upgrading to a 16×20 or 18×24 canvas lands most orders in the $55–$85 range depending on the option you pick at checkout. The Elven Fantasy Portrait and the Viking Couple Portrait are the two where we most consistently recommend going up a size. The background detail in both is genuinely worth the extra spend.

$100+ — Multiple portraits or premium bundle

Some customers order two: one for the couple's home and one as a gift for the parents at a wedding. A few order the same photo in two different themes — Viking for the office, Regency for the bedroom. We don't have a formal bundle discount at the moment (that's something our team is looking at for Q3 2026, so no promises), but ordering two separate portraits in the same session is easy enough. At that point you're usually in the $100–$140 range depending on sizes.

We print and ship from our US facility. Standard production is 2-3 business days, then 5-7 days domestic shipping. That makes the realistic door-to-door window about 7-10 days for most US addresses — though we've hit 6 days regularly for East Coast orders.

• Valentine's Day 2026 (Feb 14): Order by Feb 4 for US standard. Feb 1 if you're international (EU/UK runs 7-14 days after dispatch).
• Mother's Day 2026 (May 10): Order by Apr 30 for US. Apr 25 for EU/UK/AU.
• Father's Day 2026 (Jun 21): Order by Jun 10 for US standard. Jun 4 for international.
• Christmas 2026: Order by Dec 14 for US standard shipping. Dec 7 for EU/UK. If you're cutting it close, digital delivery is available — you can gift the digital file and arrange printing locally, or we can hold the physical order for a January arrival.
• Anniversaries & Birthdays: Count back 10 days from the date you need it. That's our safe rule. We've had customers order on a Tuesday and receive by the following Monday, but we'd never promise that as a baseline.

One honest note: holiday windows (first two weeks of December, first week of February) do add 1-2 days to production. We staff up for it, but volume is volume. If the date is non-negotiable, order early.

The customers who get the most out of a couple portrait are the ones who lean into the theme rather than fighting it. A Viking portrait isn't supposed to look exactly like a photograph — it's supposed to look like you, but more epic. When people give us that creative latitude, the results are consistently better. The ones who ask for realistic skin tones and specific hair colors down to the hex code... those are harder conversations.

We've seen a genuine shift in what couples want from a gift. Three years ago, photo books were still the benchmark. Now we see customers specifically saying they're replacing photo books with portrait art because it's displayable in a way a book isn't. The portrait hangs on the wall. It's in the room every day.
